Earlier this week the Trudeau government delivered one of their 2019 campaign promesses to ban assault weapons from Canada. As as survivor of the 2006 Dawson College shooting I know first hand what kind of damage can be inflected when guns are not properly controlled.
Starting today, the gun used at Dawson College, the Baretta CX4 Storm will now be “prohibited” rather than simply “restricted” as will some of the guns used in the recent Nova Scotia killing spree. I welcome this long overdue news that we called for in the fallout of the Dawson shooting but never obtained.
There is no need for semi automatic weapons in Canada. The ban should be extended to handguns as well. Licensing requirements need to be increased and we should reinstate the federal gun registry as quickly as possible.
Although the Green Party also called for a semi automatic weapons ban in our 2019 election platform, the reality is that Green Party has struggled with the issue of gun control for some time. The party welcomed Bruce Hyer as a Green Party MP after he had been thrown out of the NDP for voting with the Harper government to scrap the gun registry.
More recently, Jenica Atwin, our federal Green Party MP for Fredricton took to facebook to call the ban divisive while explaining that there would be two years to “debate” this ban before it comes into force.
I'm seeing so much division over the Prime Minister's announcement today. Do not let this divide us! We are still the…
While the issue of gun control may be divisive, especially with a well funded and extremely agressive gun lobby in Canada. However, it is necessary to press forward with gun control measures despite all the pressure to do nothing. The Canadian gun lobby is relentless and will be bombarding MPs with letters and political pressure and intimidation in an attempt to eliminate their voices from the gun control movement. If you think I am exaggerating, note this; last year the Canadian Coalition for Firearms Rights openly urged its members to file misconduct complaints against Canadian doctors who support stronger gun control laws.
Bruce Hyer who is currently the Ontario representative on the Green Party of Canada Federal Council put out a statement saying that the debate is “simplistic” and that “all semi-automatics should be restricted” but stopped short of endorsing Trudeau’s outright ban which would make semi automatic weapons “prohibited”.
1) Matt Galloway is doing a great job on CBC's "The Current"2) I got into hot water at home, across Canada, and with…
This country just experienced our most deadly shooting. The time to stand up the the gun lobby and say enough is enough is now; all semi automatics and handguns should be classified as “prohibited”. The Green Party should be at the forefront of the movement for gun control standing in solidarity with victims and anti-violence advocates. This issue has already been debated for decades. The time for decisive action is now.
